Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru sought to develop India as a world leader in Science and Technology. To achieve this, several IITs and NITs (Erstwhile RECs) were established in different parts of the country. Regional Engineering College at Silchar was founded in 1967 as a co-operative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Assam to cater to the country's need for manpower in technology. RECs were jointly operated by the central government and the concerned state government. Non-recurring expenditures and expenditures for post-graduate courses during the REC period were borne by the central government, while recurring expenditure on undergraduate courses was shared equally by central and state governments. The college was conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. In 2002, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and was renamed National Institute of Technology, Silchar. . In 2007, through NIT Bill, the Indian government declared these schools as Institute of National Importance at par with the Indian Institutes of Technology; although quality-wise, many NITs (including NIT Silchar) have long ways to go in order to measure up to the standards of IITs.
NIT Silchar offers Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in various disciplines spanning Engineering, Science and Humanities. The institute has 10 departments with about 200 faculty members and around 2000 enrolled students. The annual intake for the B.Tech. program is 520, with a student-faculty ratio of 10:1.
The institute awards B.Tech. degrees in six engineering[1] disciplines and four applied disciplines . Admission to these programs is through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). NITS follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs). The institute also accepts foreign nationals through scholarships awarded by the Government of India, and non-resident Indians through an independent scheme known as Direct Admission for Students Abroad (DASA).
The B.Tech. program is a four-year program. The first year of the B.Tech. program is common across all disciplines, in which students are taught the basic courses in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Programming Language and Professional communication.
The Institute offers graduate programs in 9 disciplines M.Tech Programs in
The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the institute, has 60,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs and video tapes. The Central Library at the NIT Silchar is privileged to support the institute’s march towards its vision: "To develop the institute into the systematic leader and pivot for excellence in technical education sector and catalyzing absorption, innovation, diffusion and transfer of high technology for improved productivity, quality of life and improved empowerment thereby effecting regional growth."
The Central Library undertook major renovation activities to create a state-of-the-art facility. During the reporting year, the library has been fully automated with Libsys software and implemented RFID and DVR technology for security purpose under TEQIP grant. The library has become the first in the northeast region to implement RFID and DVR technology. Database creation is in process.
The library staff has been trained in the computerization activities. The staff has successfully completed two projects, Virtual Classroom and Developing a Digital Library, sponsored by MHRD, government of India under MODROB scheme. Under the project the library has established the first-ever digital library in an educational institution in northeast India and has implemented the e-learning solution in the institute.[2]
NIT Silchar is a fully residential campus. There are eight hostels for boys and two hostels for girls.[3] Messes are run privately or by students themselves. Other basic and advanced facilities are available for student comfort. Each hostel is under the care of a warden and Board of Hostel Management (BHM) oversees the functioning.
Most of the teachers and the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the institute. A house beside the director's office extends hospitality to guests. A new state-of-the-art guest house is near completion.
NIT Silchar has a vibrant hostel culture and students are allotted different hostels every year.
The institute has a full-fledged State Bank of India branch inside the campus. It provides assistance in opening savings account and depositing institute-related fees and dues. State Bank of India has installed an ATM besides the main gate of the bank.
The institute has a co-operative market complex (popularly known as COP) in the center of the campus. All kinds of student necessities are available here. A bigger multi-storied market complex is to be constructed soon.
The institute has a government post office on the campus maintained by Indian Post.
Organizations on-campus includes:
As with all educational institutions in India, NIT Silchar has a student body which takes the initiative of organising various activities for the students all year long. The Student’s Gymkhana[4] comprises members who head posts and take the responsibility of student welfare and extracurricular activities in the college. The members of the Gymkhana are final-year students who are selected for their offices by teachers after several rounds of interviews based on their leadership and management skills. Headed by the vice-president, the Gymkhana consists of the general secretary, cultural secretary, literary secretary, general secretary (sports) and the cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, indoor games and gymnasium secretaries. The Gymkhana works under the able guidance of the dean of students affairs and the faculty advisors to the offices. These student leaders are responsible for coordinating events for the all-rounded personality development of the students.
The Gymkhana takes the initiative each year for organizing the college festival “Incandescence” (cultural) and "Tecnoesis" (tech), publishing the college magazine IGNITS and monthly paper NITSPEAK, organizing sporting events as well as literary events such as debates and quizzes. These events ensure that the students get ample opportunities to develop the skills required to succeed in today’s competitive world. It is due to the efforts of the Gymkhana that the engineering students of today go on to become successful in the corporate world tomorrow.
The institute recognizes extracurricular activities as a part of student life and well-equipped facilities for games and sports are provided on the hostels premises, in other locations and in the student activity center. Hostels are equipped with most of the indoor games facilitates. The student activity center is used as an indoor stadium. A well laid fenced playing ground is used for outdoor games and tracking events. Besides these, students, faculty and staff have facilities for tennis, basketball, volleyball, etc. Inter-hostel cricket, football and volleyball events are regularly conducted. Inter-college cricket, football and volleyball events are regularly held. The gymnasium center houses modern fitness and gym equipment.
Students participate in competitions organized on the occasions of Republic Day, Independence Day, etc. Quizzes, debates and technical competitions are held under the banner of the societies. NITS organizes annual technical and cultural festivals respectively called the Technoesis and Incandescence where students enhance their skills.
Students are taken in for the undergraduate courses through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by CBSE, New Delhi. More than one million students wrote this test in 2011 to gain admission into one of the 30 NIT's. This makes it one of the largest such examinations in the world. Admission to some other autonomous national level technical institutes (called Deemed University) is also through AIEEE.
Admission to the graduate M.Tech and PhD courses are primarily based on scores in the GATE exam, conducted by the IITs. Faculty from other institutes work as research scholars in NITC under the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP). It is the national coordination centre for the QIP of polytechnic institutes.
Under the constitution of the National Institutes of Technology Act 2007, the President of India is the Visitor to the institute. The authorities of the institute are Board of Governors and the Senate. The Board is headed by the Chairman, who is appointed by the Visitor. The Director, who is the secretary of the Board, looks after the day-to-day running of the institute. The Board of Governors has nominees of the Central Government, the State Government, the NIT Council and the Institute Senate.[5]
